Brennivín Rúgbraud Edition is the most uniquely Icelandic spirit ever bottled — a limited expression that takes the country's iconic "Black Death" aquavit and infuses it with one of Iceland's most beloved and unusual culinary traditions. Rúgbraud is traditional Icelandic dark rye bread — but not baked in any conventional oven. Instead, it is slow-baked for a full day in the warm earth near Geysir, Iceland's most famous hot spring area, using nothing but natural geothermal volcanic heat from below the surface to cook it into a sweet, dense, malty loaf unlike any bread made anywhere else on earth. For this expression, the rúgbraud is crumbled and mixed directly into Brennivín's classic caraway aquavit and allowed to macerate for two weeks before filtration and bottling at 40% ABV — combining two of Iceland's oldest and most beloved traditions in a single bottle. The result is extraordinary — the nose reveals an aromatic blend of toasted grains, hints of caraway, and a touch of sweetness, while the palate delivers earthy dark rye bread character combined with subtle caraway warmth, malted sweetness, and a smooth slightly oily texture from the high-pH Icelandic water. It tastes precisely like biting into freshly geothermally baked rye bread — and there is nothing else like it in the world.
