Bourbon Culture's verdict on Eagle Rare 12 opens with the word unfortunately — unfortunately, because Buffalo Trace did such a good job that it's going to be impossible to find. Eagle Rare has been the ten-year, 90-proof Buffalo Trace bottle since 1975; in 2024 the distillery added a twelve-year at 100 proof, its first new permanent Eagle Rare expression in decades, in the tall bottle with the eagle in relief. It's the low-rye Mash Bill #1 behind Buffalo Trace and Stagg — though Bourbon Culture notes barrel-pick groups have found Eagle Rare barrels marked Mash Bill #2, the Blanton's recipe — aged a minimum of twelve years in new charred oak in the Frankfort warehouses, batched, and bottled at 100 proof. Bourbon Culture found the twelve years added more depth than the ten without drowning in oak, with the proof dialed for approachability, and argues a batched product like this delivers the label's best traits more reliably than a single barrel. Expect Eagle Rare's signature — toffee, honey, orange peel, leather, and dry oak — deepened by two more years into dark caramel, dried cherry, tobacco, and cocoa, with the extra ten proof points turning the ten-year's short, dry finish into a long, warm, oaky one. Honest note: allocated on arrival and marked up on secondary; at retail it's the best age-stated Buffalo Trace bourbon under the Antique Collection. Neat, in a Glencairn.
