Gin Recipe 01 was the first thing Common Ground Spirits ever made, and it set the template: two botanicals in the name, a California-sourced bill behind them, and a gin built to be versatile rather than showy. Julian Peebles and Tory Brown — tech-industry coworkers turned lifelong friends who shared common ground as men of color in an industry where that was rare — founded the Black-owned craft distillery in Berkeley in 2020 with a mission built into the name: spirits as the thing people find common ground over. The gins are formulated with neighbor Ryan Sutherland of Sutherland Distilling in Livermore, using a layered technique where botanicals macerate and bond first, then a fresh round goes in before redistillation.
