‘Copper Pot’ is the sort of California Poppy that seems to catch fire the moment sunlight hits it—all coppery-orange silk, warm undertones, and unapologetic glow. The satiny flowers float above finely cut blue-green foliage, opening wide in bright weather and folding themselves closed toward evening or beneath cloudy skies. It is familiar California exuberance dressed in a particularly handsome new color.
Plants form airy mounds about 12–18 inches tall, weaving happily through wildflower plantings, cottage gardens, gravel beds, and sunny border fronts. The burnished blooms are marvelous with cobalt blue, violet, cream, silver, and soft apricot companions. Bees and other pollinators stop by frequently, while deer generally show considerably less enthusiasm.
Give ‘Copper Pot’ full sun and lean-to-average, well-drained soil. Once established, it needs little water; rich soil and lavish irrigation tend to create foliage at the expense of flowers. In congenial spots it may self-sow, leaving a scattering of welcome copper sparks for another season. Deadhead if you prefer a tidier display or want to limit seedlings. Read our notes on pollinator-friendly spring plantings, and explore more colors in the California Poppy collection.
